Google
This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project
to make the world's books discoverable online.
It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject
to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.
Usage guidelines
Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the
public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing tliis resource, we liave taken steps to
prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.

+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for
personal, non-commercial purposes.
+ Refrain fivm automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine
translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the
use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.
+ Maintain attributionTht GoogXt "watermark" you see on each file is essential for in forming people about this project and helping them find
additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.
+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just
because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner
anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liabili^ can be quite severe.

of this Edition is peculiar. There are several Pieces in it which are not con-

Two Volumes (bound in one.) A New Edition. Considerably Enlarged.
Edinburgh : Printed for T. Cadell, London, and William Creech, Edin-
burgh. MDCOXCiV. [Post Octavo— with Beugo*s Portrait. This was the
last Edition published in the Author's lifetime, and of which he superin-
tended the printing. Lt.-Col. Cunningham, son of Allan Cunningham,
Esquire, the famed Biographer of Burns — draws our attention to an altera-
tion in the last verse of the postscript to the *• Earnest Cry and Prayer,''
in this firom previous Editions — which is made to read thus : —
" Scotland^ my auld respected mither !
Tho' whiles you mostify your leather,
Till when ye speak, ye aiblins blether ;
Yet deil mak matter !
Freedom and Whisky gang thegither,
Tak aflf your whitter. "
CoL C. says, this reading has not been followed, *' as it ought to have been^^
Kf in any future Edition. We have mentioned this in our circle of literary
friends, but they don't agree with the 1794 reading. The Original, which, as
we have said, has been adhered to in all other Editions, runs: —
" Scotland^ my auld, respected mither !
Tho' whiles ye mostify your leather,
Till whare ye sit, on craps o' heather.
Ye tine your dam ;
Freedom and Whisky gang thegither,
Tak aff your dram ! "]

friend to give a short sketch of the Life of Robert Burns, to be prefixed
to a small edition of his Poems; because my friend was unwilling to en-
croach on the literary property of other editors. I complied with the
request, and made a present of my trifling, but, to me, pleasant labours to
the Publishers; so that I had no interest of a pecuniary nature in tbe sale
of the publication, nor was I consulted with regard to the selection of the
Poems. (It is nothing, however, but a complete collection of the Poems
and Songs published by the Poet himself, and his most esteemed editors.)
My sole design was to give what I considered a fair and impartial character
of the Bard, avoiding the extravagant panegyrics of one class of writers, and
the uncharitable omw adversas of another.*' — Rev. Hamilton Paul's Pam-
phlet, " A Foretaste of Pleasant Things. Air, 1828."J

Farewell ! High Chief of Scottish song !
That couldst alternately impart
Wisdom and rapture in thy page,
And brand each vice with satire strong ;

Farewell ! and ne'er may envy dare
To wring one baleful poison-drop

Still may the grateful pilgrim stop
To bless the spot that holds thy dust !

THE LIFE And WORKS OF ROBERT BURNS. Edited by Robert Chambers.
In Four Volumes. William and Robert Chambers, London and Edinburgh,
1859 and 1860. [Demy 12mo. The plan adopted in this work is—" The
various compositions are strung in strict chronological order upon the
memoir, and are made to render up the whole light they are qualified to throw
upon the history of the life and mental progress of Burns. At the sa,me
t|me, a new significancy is given to them by their being read in connection
with the current of events and emotions which led to their production." It
may be thought to be lighting a farthing candle to show the sun, for us to
make a single remark regarding this popular Edition, even to say that the
task undertaken has been most successfully carried out; but certainly such
is the fact. Mr. Chambers has collected many productions of the Poet
hitherto unknown. The Glossary is given in Marginal Notes. No lover of.
Burns ought to be without this Edition.]

by Alexander Smith. In Two Vols. London and Cambridge : Maomillan
and Co. 1865. [Foolscap Octavo — with very finely Engraved Vignettes —
forms Two Vols, of what the Publishers call' the ** Golden Treasury Series."
This is an excellent Edition — excellent especially in its typography and
general get-up. The Life is characterized by Mr, Smith's peculiar grace
and ease as a prose writer, as well as the mannerism into which he occasion*
ally lapses. Still, while we dislike nothing that has the name of BguNS
stamped on it, we must confess that throughout his " Biographical Preface^
he scarcely gives the Poet /air play^ — does not write about him with that
feeling and enthusiasm (if we may so speak) which animated Professot
Wilson, Cunningham, Chambers, or even our own Gunnyon. The Me*
moir is short. The closing peroration is a very beautiful point in it. Mr.
Smith, in getting np the Biography, had the use of the original MSS. of Bctrns'
" Common-place Book,*' which his Publishers had purchased from an Edin-
burgh friend, who bought it at a sale in London.]

ADDENDA,
Containing a List of Editions of Burns besides those
given in the preceding pages ^ and which are not
contained in the Private Library ^ James M'Kie,
Thus far into the Editions of Bubns kave we marched onwards. Oar last
visit to Dublin materially increased our number of old and rare Editions,
and by hunting up from Edinburgh and London Catalogues, and through
the kindness of friends, they have come to the extent noted in the pre-
ceding pages. Stilly with all the ferreting of ourselves and friends, the
following Addenda show that there have been nearly as many more Edi-
tions published, which we htwe not, as there are in our possession.
In collecting the foregoing List, and furnishing copy to make up these
Addenda, we have been greatly assisted by friends in London, Edin-
burgh, Glasgow, and Kilmarnock, to whose cop2/t in all cases, we have
H^ick exactly. Most materially have we been indebted to a gentleman, our
old, much respected, and kind friend,-^a companion of our early days, — Mr.
James Gibson, of Bradford ; while, to fiU up any blanks, we have had re-
course to copying from Mr. R, Chaicbebs' "Bibliography of Bubns.*' •
Our commimications with our cerrespondents have been of the most
pleasing and gratifying nature, and the interest that they, and " The Trade,"
and many others, have taken in the publication of the Fac-JSimtle of the
Original Kilmarnock Edition of ^' Poems, chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, by
BoBEBT Bubns," to which this Pamphlet is meant as an accompaniment, we
shall not soon forget, and we take this opportunity of tendering them our
most sincere thanks. The Edition, amounting to 600 Copies, is already
entirely subscribed. An Edition of a work being subscribed before the
paper can begot made, on which to print it, is as far as we know, without
a parallel in the history of literature.
